Couch to 5K
July 29, 2008
This is an intriguing fitness program. I’ve never been into running much, but boy do I need to get in shape. I like that there are podcasts that take you through the program–you just start up the podcast and a voice tells you when to switch from jogging to walking, and in between, music plays that has a tempo appropriate to the pace you should be setting. Seems like it simplifies the whole thing; just do what the voice tells you and you’ll stay on track.

Interesting. I may have to give this a try. I’ve always been interestedin running but have never been able to get started. Thanks for the heads up!
I’ve also just started this similar program, for pushups:
http://hundredpushups.com/
Yeah, I was looking at hundredpushups too. I’m kicking around the idea of doing both programs at the same time on alternating days (since they both require 3 days a week). I don’t want to sabotage myself by doing too much too fast, but my 30th birthday is fast approaching and I’m looking at it as an opportunity to turn over a new leaf with regard to taking care of myself.
Let’s do it! Are you on zeaLOG.com? There are people doing both program there tracking their progress. Email me if you need an invite!
My mind’s in overdrive with all the geekery I could bring to bear on this running thing, and I haven’t even done the first run yet (that’ll be tomorrow morning).
Hoping the rumors of Nike+ support on the iPhone are true, as I don’t need to be thinking of buying an iPod nano.
Oh and Sara, thanks for the zeaLOG invite! Looks like fun. I logged the 10 pushups I did for the hundredpushups initial test.
Ok, I did my initial test and first day of training for the pushup thing. I had to do the girly kind, but that’s better than no pushups at all, right?
Hoping to start the running thing this weekend. Nervous. I downloaded a bunch of the podcasts.
Did the first C25K session tonight. It was strenuous but not too difficult, although my lower legs are a little sore. Hoping that’ll subside as they adjust to the exercise, although Erica (a cross country star in her high school days) says there may be some improvements needed in my form. She’s going to analyze my stride and give me pointers.
While I was out I was listening to one of the C25K podcasts; the music was all techno electronica stuff, and while it wasn’t terrible, I was thinking about how I could import a playlist of my own music into Garage Band, and then record the “OK, start running” and “Back to a brisk walk for a minute” cues myself. Or have Erica do it, since I’d much rather listen to her than myself.
Did week 1, session 2 last night. (Yes, I know I took 2 days of rest instead of the prescribed 1. I’m putting this on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule.) It was definitely easier this time, with less soreness afterward. Feeling optimistic about bumping it up a notch next week for week 2.
OK, this is something that Josh will love. Thanks for the info, and hope you and your fam are doing well!
Boy am I surprised to find that my poor, neglected little blog got a comment! Perhaps I should take this as a cue to update more often.
Couch to 5K is a great program–I did eventually get to the point of being able to run for 30 minutes without stopping, and I think Erica and I are going to run in a real 5K this spring.
The fam is doing great–perhaps I will write an update post with more detail.
Thanks for stopping by, Erin!
